जागेश्वर मंदिर समूह के मुख्य मंदिर के ठीक उत्तर की ओर लगभग चार किलोमीटर की दूरी तय कर कई पगडंडियों से गुजरते चढ़ाई चढ़ भी वृद्ध जागेश्वर पहुंचा जा सकता है. इसके दूसरी तरफ जागेश्वर से दक्षिण दिशा की ओर शिव रूप में पूजे जाने वाले सैम देवता का मंदिर है. यहाँ के पुजारी पांडे जी बताते हैं कि सदियों पहले जब जागेश्वर मंदिर बनाना आरम्भ हुआ तब निर्माण में कोई न कोई विघ्न बाधा आती थी. जब सैम के इस स्थान पर बलिदान किया गया तब से काज सफल हुए. यहाँ भगवती का थान है जिसमें बलिदान होता रहा. पर सैम देवता को तो बस दाल भात का भोग लगता है, मिर्च तक नहीं चढ़ती. 

प्रायः अधिकांश शिव मंदिरों में दाल-भात का ही भोग चढ़ता है पर वृद्ध जागेश्वर में विष्णु रूप में पूजे गये शिव जी को मालपुए का भोग दिन में एक बार अर्पित किया जाता है. विष्णु भगवान के रूप में शिव को पूजे जाने से यहाँ बलि नहीं होती. नारियल भी नहीं तोड़ा जाता. रीठागाड़ खांकरी गाँव के भट्ट ब्राह्मण वृद्ध जागेश्वर मंदिर में परंपरागत रूप से पूजा अर्चना संपन्न कराते रहे हैं.

इस मंदिर में कई अनुष्ठान एवं विवाह संपन्न होते हैं. मंदिर के अहाते में हनुमानजी, कालिका माता, भैरव व कुबेर स्थापित हैं. मान्यता है कि विशेष पर्व में संतान प्राप्ति के लिए मंदिर के प्रांगण में महिलाएं रात्रि भर हाथ में जलता दीप लिए खड़ी रह प्रार्थना करतीं हैं. मनोकामना पूर्ण होने पर मंदिर में चांदी के छत्र व ताम्र पात्र चढ़ाए जाते हैं.

Vriddha Jageshwar temple is situated slightly upstream from the Jageshwar temple complex. This temple about 3 km uphill Jageshwar, called the Old Shiva, is said to be the abode of Shiva before he came down to Jageshwar. The unremitting peace they emanate is one of the most fascinating aspects about both Jageshwar and Vriddha Jageshwar.

Location & How to Reach Vriddha Jageshwar-  Jageshwar is a Hindu pilgrimage town in Almora district of Uttarakhand . Almora is well connected with major northern cities via motorable roads .
